The Business of the month for February 2016 is The Harbor Grill, owned by John Hicks and Operating Proprietor Keegan Hicks.
After working and being around restaurants for many years, John and his Wife, Wanda, had dreamed of opening their own restaurant. The perfect opportunity presented itself in the Dana Point Harbor in the spring of 1984. The Hicks decided to relocate from San Francisco to Dana Point and opened the Harbor Grill. With John managing the restaurant and Wanda taking care of the day-to-day business, Harbor Grill was an instant success.
Growing up in the restaurant, Keegan decided to focus his college career in resort restaurant management, and had the opportunity to take over the day to day operations in the family business in 202, to prepare him to become the Operating Proprietor in 2006 when his dad retired. Today, Harbor Grill employs approximately 45 people, depending on the time of year.
The Harbor Grill sets itself apart from other restaurants with their mesquite grill that gives meat a vast amount of flavor, while still keeping it healthy. Executive Chef Angel Fabian has been with Harbor Grill for over 30 years offering a delicious array of dishes from more traditional to elaborate pieces and inventive styles. They serve lunch, dinner and a Sunday champagne breakfast.
The staff at Harbor Grill have created an atmosphere that makes customers feel at home from the moment they enter the restaurant. They strive to provide fine food and service in a casual atmosphere. Their commitment to quality is of the utmost importance in every aspect of the business, which has contributed to them being named the Best Overall Restaurant in Dana Point, by the Dana Point Time for the past five years. Also, they have consistently been named one of the top 10 restaurants for sea food in Orange County by Open Table.
Harbor Grill believes a business is more than just a making a profit, and strongly believes in investing back into the community. They have provided support for many local non-profits including Dana Hills High School, Fish for Life, Dana Point Symphony, Mission Hospital Foundation, and the assistance league of Saddleback Valley, to name a few. Keegan has said that if they are asked to help, he will find a way for the Harbor Grill to be involved, but his greatest accomplishment is when someone has said they had a great meal as they leave the restaurant.
Congratulations to the Harbor Grill team! We wish you many years of continued success!
